About the trekking

Discover the west face of Mururata on a day hike that combines Andean panoramas, history, and emblematic wildlife.

We depart from La Paz South Zone, with views of the Valley of the Souls (Valle de las Animas), the Palca Canyon, and the Illimani and Mururata snow-capped peaks. After about 3 hours of drive we arrive at Abra Pacuani, the starting point.

The route begins with an easy ascent (~1 hr) to an old water viaduct that leads along a gentle slope to the Oquerucho Valley (2 hrs), where we will stop for a snack. From there you can see the impressive southwest face of Mururata. We continue ascending to the Huayllaravi pass (approx. 4,800 m), the highest point, with panoramic views of the Takesi and Kasiri peaks and the Murillo ranges. The descent (u22483 hrs) takes us to the Choquekota Valley, where the hike ends. During the route it is possible to spot condor pairs and llamas. Return to La Paz by private transport.

By starting with a moderate day hike at intermediate elevations, participants can reduce the risk of altitude sickness, improve their physical comfort, and enhance overall safety and enjoyment during the more demanding treks that follow. This gradual approach is especially important in Bolivia, where some trails exceed 4,000 meters (13,100 feet).
