About the trekking

🌌 AHE’s Uyuni & High-Desert Odyssey: 5 Days of Salt, Fire, and Flamingos

Welcome to Bolivia’s surreal southwest—a land of blinding white salt flats, ruby-red lagoons, smoking geysers, and endless Andean skies. This 5-day circuit, offered exclusively byĀ Andes Heritage Expeditions (AHE), masterfully blends trekking, 4×4 adventure, and a scenic flight back from the legendary Uyuni Salt Lake.

Day 1–2: From La Paz to the Salt Kingdoms

We leave the bustling streets ofĀ La PazĀ behind and head southwest in rugged 4×4 vehicles. Our route cuts through vast stretches of theĀ Altiplano—the high plateau—with theĀ East and West Andes mountain rangesĀ marching alongside us like ancient guardians.

We pass through picturesque high-plateau communities:Ā Sabaya,Ā Vitaline Village, andĀ Coipasa town. Our first major wonder is theĀ Coipasa Salt Lake, which we cross to reach the charming town ofĀ Salinas de Garci Mendoza.

Here, time seems to fold back on itself. You’ll visit the famousĀ Andean Mummies of Sabaya—silent witnesses to pre-Columbian rituals—and then hike up the flanks of theĀ Tunupa Volcano. From the summit viewpoints, theĀ Uyuni Salt FlatsĀ unfurl beneath you like a fractured mirror stretching to the horizon. It’s a panorama that will steal your breath—literally and figuratively.

Day 3: Crossing the Largest Salt Flat on Earth

From Tunupa, we drive directly onto theĀ Uyuni Salt Flats—the largest and highest salt lake on the planet. The white hexagons of salt crackle underfoot as we visitĀ islandsĀ rising from the middle of this crystalline sea. Here, giant cacti and unique high-altitude vegetation cling to ancient coral-like rock.

This is one of those rare places where perspective plays tricks on you—perfect for those impossible, distortion-free photos. After a full day of exploration, we arrive inĀ Uyuni Town, gateway to the next chapter of our journey.

Day 4: The Eduardo Abaroa National Reserve – A World of Liquid Colors

From Uyuni, we enter one of Bolivia’s most spectacular protected areas: theĀ Eduardo Abaroa National Reserve. Prepare for landscapes that look more like Mars than Earth.

🦩 Cañapa & Hedionda Lagoons

Altitude:Ā ~4,200–4,300 m
Two saline lagoons shimmering in shallow pinks and greens. Their true stars?Ā Andean and James’s flamingos, wading gracefully against a backdrop of volcanic peaks and rust-colored desert.Ā Best visited October–March for breeding season and milder weather.

Tip: Binoculars and layered clothing are essential—cold nights arrive quickly.

šŸœļø Siloli Desert

Altitude:Ā ~4,600 m
A vast, otherworldly plain of sand, salt, and volcanic soils. Sunrise and sunset here turn the landscape into a canvas of gold and shadow. The wind sculpts dunes, and the silence is absolute.

Tip: Windproof jacket, sunscreen, and plenty of water.

šŸŒ¬ļø The Stone Tree (Ɓrbol de Piedra)

An iconic wind-eroded rock formation standing alone like a petrified tree. It’s one of the most photographed spots in all of Bolivia—especially during golden hour.

Tip: Watch your footing on the loose, rocky ground.

šŸ”“ Red Lagoon (Laguna Colorada)

Altitude:Ā ~4,278 m
Perhaps the crown jewel of the reserve. The lagoon’s intenseĀ red colorĀ comes from minerals and specialized algae. White borax islands float like icebergs, and hundreds of flamingos create a moving sea of pink against the crimson water. The surrounding mountains complete a scene of almost violent beauty.

Best time: October–March for peak flamingo activity.
Tip: Keep your distance from wildlife and bring a camera with good zoom.

šŸŒ‹ Geysers (Morning Sun – Sol de MaƱana)

A geothermal field of fumaroles, boiling mud pools, and roaring steam vents. Sulfur yellows and mineral oranges paint the ground. Early morning tours capture the most dramatic steam plumes rising into the freezing air.

Safety: Stay strictly on marked paths—the crust is thin and hot.
Tip: Dress extremely warmly and limit time near sulfur vents.

ā™Øļø ā€œPolquesā€ Hot Springs

After the cold, wind, and otherworldly landscapes, reward yourself in theĀ natural hot springs of Polques. Warm, mineral-rich waters soothe tired muscles as you gaze out over the high-desert plains. Simple, rustic, and utterly perfect.

Tip: Bring a towel and change of clothes. Facilities are basic—that’s part of the charm.

Day 5: Return to La Paz – Or Continue the Adventure

After our final sunrise in the reserve, we drive back toĀ Uyuni Town. From here, you have two choices:

  • āœˆļøĀ Fly back to La Paz – enjoying bird’s-eye views of the salt flats you just crossed.

  • 🄾 Continue trekkingĀ with another AHE circuit—because once you’ve tasted the Andes, one adventure is never enough.

Why Choose AHE’s Uyuni Circuit?
