About the day hike

The itinerary is performed through the south west side of La Paz city where a vehicle takes our guests through many and different pintoresque places where beautiful and scenic views are offered.

The trip starts at your hotel in La Paz in the morning and transfer south toward Achocalla and the community of Layuri. Scenic route along the edge of the high plateau with privileged views of the Illimani and Mururata snow-capped peaks and of the city of La Paz. Stops include the Huanuni archaeological complex (chullpas and ceremonial center/viewpoint), a descent through the southern valleys to the Caracato valley floor, a soak at the Juntuma Hot Springs (Aguas Termales de Juntuma), and on the way back, a visit to the ruins of an old Jesuit mission on the return. Return to La Paz at dusk (approx. 6:30–7:30 PM).

  • Highlights:
    – Spectacular panoramic views of Illimani, Mururata, and La Paz from the southern plateau.
    – Huanuni archaeological site: several chullpas and a ceremonial center at the mountain summit, with strong cultural and scenic value. Short walks to access the structures and viewpoint.
    – Caracato valley and Loayza province: rural landscapes, vineyards, and orchards (grapes, peaches, apples, pears).
    – Juntuma Hot Springs (Aguas Termales de Juntuma) (~3,000 m): warm, well-maintained natural pools for relaxing.
    – Ruins of a Jesuit mission on the return route, an interesting historical site.
  • Duration and difficulty
    – Full day, departing in the morning and returning at dusk.
    – Mostly vehicle transfer; short to moderate walks at high elevation at the archaeological site. No technical skills required.
  • Practical tips
    – Altitude: activities range from ~3,000 m to the high plateau.
    – Clothing: layers, warm windproof jacket, hat, and sunscreen.
    – Comfortable footwear for uneven terrain.
    – Swimsuit and towel for the hot springs.
    – Bring water, snacks, and cash for local purchases.
    – Respect archaeological sites: do not touch remains or move objects; follow the guide’s instructions.
    – Best enjoyed on clear days for optimal views and photos.

This circuit combines Andean scenery, pre-Hispanic archaeology, religious heritage, and thermal relaxation—ideal for visitors seeking culture, panoramas, and a rural experience near La Paz.

By starting with a moderate day hike at intermediate elevations, participants can reduce the risk of altitude sickness, improve their physical comfort, and enhance overall safety and enjoyment during the more demanding treks that follow. This gradual approach is especially important in Bolivia, where some trails exceed 4,000 meters (13,100 feet).
