The hike takes a full day, departing from La Paz at 7 am with transportation to the Pacuani Pass. From this point, the moderate-intensity hike begins, with moderate ascents and gentle descents. The route approaches the northeast base of Illimani and offers views of several peaks in the Cordillera Real, including Mururata and Chillata, as well as lagoons such as Arteza and Artezapata. Finally, the descent leads to the valley of the mining town of Tres Ríos, at an altitude of approximately 3,800 meters. The return to La Paz takes place in the late afternoon.

This full-day hike is part of a structured acclimatization program designed to help visitors gradually adjust to the high-altitude conditions commonly encountered in the Bolivian Andes. It serves as a preparatory stage before embarking on the longer trekking routes offered by Andes Heritage Expeditions (AHE). By starting with a moderate day hike at intermediate elevations, participants can reduce the risk of altitude sickness, improve physical comfort, and enhance overall safety and enjoyment during more demanding treks that follow—especially important in Bolivia, where some trails exceed 4,500 meters.
