The Kotapampa–Caluyo–Charazani circuit combines a 3-day Lake Titicaca island trek with a 2-day Kallawaya cultural trek and an additional for transportation and to participate in cultural events at the end of the trek (6 days total).
Located in northern La Paz department (Bautista Saavedra province), the route ranges roughly from 2,800 to 4,500 m and is rated low difficulty, suitable for travelers seeking gentle altitude walking with strong cultural and scenic content.
The Lake Titicaca segment departs near Copacabana and crosses to the Islands of the Sun and Moon. Walks on Isla del Sol (north–south Challapampa–Yumani) and Isla de la Luna follow pre-Columbian trails past important Inca sites (Chinkana, Sacred Rock, Yumani stairs, Iñak Uyo palace), panoramic lake views and archaeological points of interest. After three days on the lake, the group crosses by boat to Kotapampa to begin the Kallawaya circuit.
The Kallawaya section focuses on living indigenous culture: visiting Caluyo’s local museum, tasting native herbal infusions, and meeting families who farm potatoes, raise camelids and weave textiles. Trails descend from Kotapampa toward Caluyo along ancient Andean paths, passing highland lagoons, viewpoints, the sacred Akhamani peak (Apolobamba range), rivers and foggy transitional zones into Quechua villages. The route culminates at Charazani, which offers hot springs and cultural sites, including the little-studied stone ruins of Chullpapata—considered sacred by locals.
Highlights and practical notes: strong cultural immersion with the UNESCO-recognized Kallawaya healers (traditional medical knowledge, rituals and secret language), varied landscapes (high-altitude lake shores, island ridges, Andean puna and transitional valleys), archaeological sites, and community-based tourism benefiting local families. Logistics include boat crossings, moderate daily walking, simple village accommodations and opportunities to learn about traditional herbal medicine and rural Andean life.
